About ESAs

An ESA is an animal that provides therapeutic benefit as part of a mental health treatment plan, as determined by a licensed behavioral health professional. ESAs differ from service animals in that they are not trained to perform specific tasks.
Unlike service animals, ESAs are not limited to dogs. Common ESAs include dogs, cats, and other domestic animals. The licensed provider and applicable housing guidelines determine what may be appropriate.
Service animals are trained to perform specific disability-related tasks and have broad public access rights under the ADA. ESAs provide comfort through companionship and are protected primarily under the Fair Housing Act for housing purposes.

The Evaluation

No. Documentation is issued only when clinically appropriate based on the licensed provider's professional judgment. We do not guarantee outcomes.
Qualifying conditions may include anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, panic disorder, OCD, and other mental health conditions. The licensed provider determines clinical appropriateness for each individual.
Most evaluations are completed within a short timeframe after intake submission and clinical review. We aim for efficiency without compromising clinical thoroughness.
This depends on your state and the provider's clinical determination. Some evaluations may be completed asynchronously; others may require a telehealth consultation.

Documentation & Housing

Our evaluations follow applicable federal housing guidance, including HUD Fair Housing Act guidelines and HUD's 2020 Assistance Animals Notice for emotional support animals.
Documentation from a licensed provider may be used to request reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act. However, landlords may have the right to request additional information. Consult legal counsel for housing-specific guidance.
Housing providers may deny ESA requests in certain circumstances. The Fair Housing Act provides protections for reasonable accommodation requests, but exemptions exist. We recommend consulting with a housing attorney for specific situations.
Documentation does not have a universal expiration date. Housing providers may request updated documentation. The provider's letter will indicate any relevant timeframes.
